ABSTRACT MODIFICATION OF TAGUCHI LOSS FUNCTION İN STATISTICAL OUALITY EVALUATION FOR CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE O.UALITY VARIABLES KOÇ, Neslihan M.Sc. in Statistics Supervisor : Prof.Dr.Mehmet ŞAHİNO?LÜ January, 1993, 114 Pages. Af ter 1980's, the conventional definition of quality control switched from“conformance-to- specifications approach”(zero-defect approach) to the guantitative approach of the reduction of variability around a predetermined target value with contributions of Genichi Taguchi in guality related cost improvement studies. He shoved that even if a finalized product lies vithin the Lower Specification Limit (LSL) and Upper Specification Limit (USL), any deviation from the target value causes an incurred loss and thus reduces the reliability of the finished product. Taguchi expressed this loss in terms of currency by using Sguared Loss Function (SLF). - iii -This study however, proposes a Total Loss-Function Approach (TOLFA) f ör not only the conventionally used continuous (NORMAL), but also discrete statistical (POISSON, BINOMIAL) distributions in terms of Squared Loss Function(SLF) and a new alternative, Absolute Loss Function(ALF) and the better combined squared-absolute loss function SALF. These calculations will be based on the options of nominal the best (N-Type), sınailer the better (S-Type), and larger the better (L-Type) as the physical situation of the guality variable commands. SLF, ALF, and SALF are calculated on a variety of data sets representing the videly used Unimodal Normal, Bimodal Normal, Poisson and Binomial distributions. As an application, to calculate the monetary loss of the Turkish Banking Sector, the proposed method is employed f ör the guality ratios which are being used by the banking sector experts.
