Özet

Bu çalışma, Lord Herbert of Cherbury'nin doğal din anlayışını tartışmaktadır. Aydınlanma felsefesinin din anlayışı olması bakımından önem arz eden doğal din kavramı Herbert'ın felsefesinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. Herbert, tarih içerisinde var olan çeşitli dinleri analiz ettikten sonra tüm dinleri tek bir evrensel dine indirgemiş ve bu evrensel dinin insanoğlunun tüm dini isteklerini karşılamada yeterli olduğunu ifade etmiştir. Herbert tarafından ortaya konulan bu `evrensel ilkeler', ona göre Tanrı tarafından tüm insanlığın aklına kazınmış ve tüm insanlık tarafından evrensel olarak kabul edilmiştir. Herbert'a göre bu ilkeler gerçek dinin tek temeli, bütün etnik dinlerin çekirdeğidir. O, dinin temel kavramları olan vahiy, mucize, peygamberlik ve kutsal kitap kavramlarını da bu evrensel ilkeler çerçevesinde yeniden yorumlamış ve Rönesans çağına özgü bir şekilde akıl ve sezgiyi ön plana çıkaran bir anlayış ortaya koymuştur.Bu çalışma üç ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölüm, Herbert'ın evrensel ilkelerini ve bu ilkelerin akla uygunluğunu ele alır. İkinci bölüm, Herbert'ın vahiy, mucize, peygamberlik ve kutsal kitap anlayışına odaklanırken; üçüncü bölüm ise, Herbert'ın düşüncesinin deizm anlayışı içerisinde değerlendirilip değerlendirilemeyeceğini ele almaktadır.

This study discuses the sense of natural religion of Lord Herbert of Cherbury. The concept of natural religion that has importance with regard to the philosophy of Enlightenment?s being sense of religion has an important place in the philosophy of Herbert. Having analyzed various religions throughout the history, Herbert collected all the religions under a universal religion and stated that this universal religion is sufficient to welcome all the religious needs of human being. According to Herbert, these `universal principles? put forward by him were kept in all humanity?s mind by God and were accepted as universal by all the humanity. According to Herbert, these principles are the only bases of real religion and the core of ethnic religions. He revaluated the inspiration, the miracle, the prophecy and the holy scripture, the basic concepts of religion, in terms of these principles and presented a sense highlighting the wise and perception special to the Renaissance Age.This study consists of three main parts. The first part evaluates the universal principles of Herbert and the suitably for the mind whereas the second part focuses on the inspiration, the miracle, the prophecy and the holy scripture of Herbert?s understanding. As for the third part, it assess whether the thought of Herbert can be evaluated with regard to the sense of deism or not.
