Özet
Bu çalışmada Galata-Pera-Şişli bölgesinin tarihsel gelişiminin büyük toplumsal tarihle nasıl iç içe geçtiği, bölgelerin kuruluşu ve gelişimi sırasında belirleyici rol oynayan gayrimüslimlerin İstanbul'daki iktisadi faaliyetleri ile sentezlenerek anlatılmaya çalışıldı.Tez üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde 19. yüzyıl itibariyle İstanbul'un nüfus yapısı, iktisadi ve toplumsal durumu ve kentsel yapı hakkında genel bir bilgi verilmek suretiyle kentin genel panoraması çizilmektedir. İkinci bölümde ilk olarak Galata, Pera ve Şişli bölgelerinin nüfus yapıları, kent ekonomisindeki yerleri incelenmektedir. Öncüllerini takip ederek gelişen bu bölgelerin gelişim süreçlerinin de değerlendirildiği bu bölümde son olarak 20. yüzyılda gayrimüslimlerin yerleşim kararlarında etkili olan tarihsel gelişmelere değinilmektedir. Üçüncü bölümde ise 1910, 1922, 1942, 1955 ve 1966 yılları itibariyle, farklı etnik gruplara mensup yerleşiklerin İstanbul'un iktisadi ve ticari hayatında oynadıkları roller ve İstanbul'un bu bölgelerindeki ticari coğrafyanın etnik dağılım kalıpları incelenmiştir.

This study intends to trace how the historical development of the Galata-Pera-Şişli triangle intertwined with the greater social history, while synthesizing the economic activities of non-Muslims in Istanbul who played a decisive role in the foundation and improvement of these regions.The thesis statement comprises three chapters. The first chapter outlines a general panorama of the city, which is based on brief information regarding the demographic composition of 19th century Istanbul and the economic and social position thereof, as well as the urban structure. The second chapter primarily analyzes the demographic structures of Galata, Beyoğlu and Şişli districts, and their positions in the urban economy. Having staged progress by following their predecessors, these districts are also evaluated given their developmental process in this section, which concludes with the historical developments in the 20th century that impacted non-Muslim communities? settlement decisions. The third chapter examines the roles taken on by residents of different ethnicities in Istanbul?s economic and commercial life ? in 1910, 1922, 1942, 1955 and 1966 ? as well as an ethnic distribution scale of the commercial geography that pervaded these regions in Istanbul.
