Özet
Bu çalışmada, Antep kentindeki sağlık hizmetlerinin modernleştirilmesinde Antep Amerikan Hastanesiyle, ona bağlı tıp okulu ve hemşire okulunun tarihleri ve işlevleri incelenmiştir. Antep'te kurulan hastane, diğer örnekler arasında en uzun ömürlüsü olmuştur ve halen bir vakıf hastanesi olarak hizmet vermektedir. Bu kurum Antep kentinin ticari, sinai ve demografik özellikleri dikkate alınarak tartışılmış, Amerikan Protestan misyoner örgütü ABCFM ile ve Osmanlı devletiyle ilişkileri incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada, kurumların misyoner örgütü ABCFM tarafından işletildiği, başlangıcından, Birinci Dünya Savaşı'na kadar gelen dönem değerlendirilmiştir.19. yüzyılın ortalarında Antep kentinde çalışmaya başlayan, ABCFM misyonerlik örgütüne bağlı misyonerler, bu kentte bir Protestan cemaat oluşturmuş, matbaa, okul ve hastane işletmişlerdir. Bu çalışmada, misyonerlerin modern tıp alanındaki faaliyetleri ele alınmış, bu çerçevede, misyonerler tarafından kurulan bir tıp okulu ve tıp okuluna bağlı olarak kurulan bir hastane, daha sonra açılan hemşire okulu, tarihi anlatısıyla tanıtılmıştır. Kurumların hangi amaçlarla, nasıl açıldığı, kimler tarafından idare edildiği ve yürütüldüğü, okullarda verilen dersler ve hastanede sunulan hizmetler, olabildiğince ayrıntılı bir şekilde sunulmuştur. Tıp Okulunda ve Hastanede çalışan tıp uzmanları hakkında bilgi verilmiş, bu kişilerin Antep'e geldiklerinde karşılaştıkları ortamı nasıl algıladığı, bu ortamı ne yöne doğru ve nasıl değiştirmeye çalıştıkları incelenmiştir.Bu tezde varılan genel sonuca göre, ABCFM misyonerlerinin temel hedefi, Protestan doktrinini yaymak ve çalıştıkları ülkelerin modern dünya pazarına eklemlenmesine katkıda bulunmaktı. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nda da amaçlardan biri, Sanayi Devrimi sonrası, dünya piyasasının gereksinimlerine uygun üretici ve tüketicileri yetiştirmekti. Sağlık alanındaki kurumsal çalışmalar, bu toplumsal dönüşümü sağlamak için, eğitim çalışmalarıyla beraber, temel bir alan olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu örnekten yola çıkarak, şu genellemeyi yapmak mümkündür: Modern tıbbın Osmanlı topraklarında yayılmasına katkıda bulunan önemli dinamiklerden biri, Protestan misyonerlerin faaliyetleri olmuştur. Ancak, Antep'te misyonerlerin dini dönüştürme çabaları sadece Ermeni nüfus arasında başarılı olmuştur.

This thesis investigates the inputs of the AmericanHospital and the connected faculty of medicine and nursing school, in the modernization of health care services in Antep. The hospital in Antep is the longest-lasting example among its kind and is still serving as a foundation hospital. The reasons behind the success of this institution are discussed with an eye on the commercial, industrial and demographic features of Antep. The links and relations between the hospital, the school of medicine and the school of nursing and the ABCFM, as well as the Ottoman government, are discussed. In this study, the period, when the ABCFM had the direct management of those institutions, which covers their beginnings and the time until the First World War, is taken under consideration. The missionariesof the ABCFM being active in Antep by mid. 19thcentury, created a Protestant community there and run a printing house, schools and a hospital. In this study, missionary activities in the field of medical education and practice are being discussed. The historical narratives of a medical school, a hospital connected to this school and the school of nursing, which later on was founded, are presented. Details and information about the services provided in the hospital, classes held in the medical and nursing schools, who directed and run those institutions, how and which purposes they served are provided. The deeds and lives of the medical professionals who served in the medical and nursing schools and at the hospital are investigated, as well as how they perceived of the environment in Antep, and how and to which direction they tried to influence their surroundings.According to the general conclusion of this thesis, the main goal of the ABCFM missionaries was, besides spreading the Protestant doctrine, contribute to the integration of the localities they worked in to the global market. One of the goals in the Ottoman Empire was to train and educate a labor force and a mass of consumers adequate for the needs of the world market that emerged after the Industrial Revolution. To achieve this social transformation, the field of healthcare was, together with the field of public education services, their main domain of work. Based on this example, it is possible to say that the actions and institutions of Protestant missionaries were among the most important dynamics for the spread and the increasing domination of modern medicine in the Ottoman EmpireHowever, the missionary effort towards religious conversion through medical services was only succesful among the Armenian population.
