ABSTRACT Skid resistance is the force developed when a tire is prevented from rotating and sliding along the pavement surface. The wet-skid resistance of a pavement can be a crucial factor of a traffic accident to determine potential damage to property and human life. The highly variable characteristics of pavement surfaces make wet-skid resistance difficult to predict because of impacts of polishing by traffic, climatic condition, and aging of pavement surfaces. Since friction force (the resistance measured or experienced when one body in contact with another is being moved or is to be moved) is dependent on contact between the tire and the pavement surface, any factor affecting either macro- or microtexture becomes significant. In this study, an attempt has been made to identify and describe those factors found to be most significantly related to pavement skid resistance. These factors are discussed from the standpoint of the design of skid-resistant surfaces, maintenance of pavement skid resistance, and its measurement. Skid resistance measurements remain the most practical method for characterizing the frictional properties of pavements. To determine the actual wet-skid resistance values of Izmir's road pavements skid resistance measurements were performed at different points by employing British Portable Skid Resistance Tester (SRT). Asphaltic concrete pavements of the Ã?iÄYli-Menemen- and and the Bornova- Salihli Highways were found to be significantly low skid-resistant Skid resistance measurements carried out on the Izmir-Ã?eşme- and Izmir Circumferential Motorway showed that frictional properties of the motorways have been rapidly decreasing due to the use of crushed limestone as aggre gate in the wearing courses which is a very susceptible stone to polishing.
