The era that witnessed the decline of Ottoman empire and the emergence of the Republic of Turkey is an interesting period both for political activities and famous politicians who shaped that period. Şemseddin Giinaltay, whose political and intellectual activities are the focus of this work, is a very interesting and even, very important figure in order to understand the political developments of this period. Furthermore, it could be asserted that Mr. Günaltay can be regarded as a bridge between“tired and sick”Ottoman Empire and new Republic of Turkey. Therefore, I think, understanding Günaltay's personality and his thoughts will help us to understand this whole period and it's importance regarding Turkish history. Throughout Şemseddin Günaltay's life many radical changes, about his political views and activities, could be observed. However, these radical changes regarded by historians as a result of the time and period he lived. In other words, Günaltay's life and works cannot be elaborated and discussed without any reference to the period he lived and even he endeavours to change the very process of emergence of the new republic. One important aspect of Günaltay's scholarship, among others, is his deep interest and studies in history, specially Islamic and Turkish history regarded by modern historians as master pieces of the field. It should not be dismissed that Günaltay is product of late Ottoman high institutions on the one hand, and he also was familiar with modern developments and currant in the west Günaltay, with this profound background, often expressed and discussed his views on the social, economical, political and even religious problems. So, he always endeavours to maintain the social, and cultural integrity of the community by means of his struggle against opposite views 98and improper solutions to the current problems of community. Therefore, he is regarded, by some writers, as a leading figure of new Republican area. Günaltay, being a religious scholar at the same time always defends the sound and clear basis of Islamic religion, while showing with clarity false and superficial beliefs and false sects. He believed that the salvation of Muslims depends a clear return to the early period of Islam, that is to 8the clear and real Islam as revealed to Prophet Mohammed. In this respect his slogan was that“Islamisation, modernisation and to become Turkish.”He also believed that Islam is not an obstacle to modernisation and civilisation. On the contrary, Islam is the real force and motive of modernisation, civilisation and science. The main problem is that Islam and ifs teaching misunderstanding. Therefore, according to Günaltay, we have to understand the real Islam, that is to return to original Islam and ifs basic sources, viz., Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet. He also believed mat with the closure of the door of ijtihad (interpretation) the door of civilisation and modernisation is also closed to Muslim world. What Muslim needs is a new effort to open this door, the door of ijtihad, and try to solve the great problems of Muslim world in general, problems of Turkish people in particular. A concert result of Gimaltays' endeavours is the establishment of Faculty of Divinity an Imam-Hatip Schools when he was in charge as Prime Minister. Thus, it is seen the he was not only a scholar with theoretical views about problems facing his country but also a practical and pragmatic person. In this work we try to evaluate and discuss some aspects of M.Günaltays' views that were unknown or neglected. Then, try to analyse these vies so that it helps to better understanding of Giinaltays' political, social and religious views. Another interesting conclusion of this work is that many social and political problems which Günaltay tried to answer still dominating present political arena and begs answers. Therefore, I think, this work will also contribute to all these discussions and help to reach a mutual understanding about Mr. Günaltay and his works. 99
