Recent advances in science and technology have greatly improved both the design and efficiency of orthopedic implants thereby widening their use. This thesis aims both to determine the use of different types of implants in Turkey and to analyze the causes of postoperative deformations in the implants. The first part of the thesis presents the results of a survey designed to determine the types of implant materials and the frequency that hip and knee prostheses and osteosynthesis materials were used in the operations performed at the orthopedics clinics throughout Turkey in 1991. Responses received fr'om a total number of 102 orthopedics clinics also demonstrate the causes and the incidence rates of deformations that most fl-equently occured in the implants used by these clinics. The experimental study presented in the second part of the thesis makes use of 24 implant materials that were obtained fr'om the orthopedics cl inics of Istanbul Hedical Factll ty and Cerrahpasa Medical Facul ty. These implants had previously been removed from patients's bodies because of reasons identified as healing, fractures and loosening. Macroscopic, microscopic and metallurgical analyses were undertaken to unravel the structure and the causes of deformations that occured in the implants.
