Whether two things occupy the same place at the same time is a widely discussed· philosophical question. Especially two types of cases make it a problem that has to be taken seriously. One is the cases of constitution. Although they exist at the same, place at the same time articulated objects and their constitutive· matter Car'.Jlot be considered identicals, they have unshared properties. The other problematic cases are the cases of Chrysippus' puzzle and the problem of the many. In these cases we consider a large part of a thing and argue that the thing as a whole and the large proper part or the thing as a whole and the large proper part plus the minute difference of the two are not identical though they occupy the same position at the same time. In the present study it is argued that problem of coincidence creates a dilemma, that a philosopher dealing with this problem has to chose between counting objects doubly or giving up essentialism. It is also argued that instead of doing such a thing he might try to resolve the dilemma and thus a trilemma. be obtained. Accounts given by philosopher like Wiggins, Doepke, Noonan, Johnston, Rudder Baker, Burke and Denkel are discussed and evaluated within the framework of this trilemma. An account which accepts one hom of the dilemma, namely double counting, is presentedand this solution is applied to other two problematic cases of coincidence.
