Özet (Çeviri)
The aim of this study is to argue against the claim that Turkish is a pro-drop language within the framework of Government and Binding Theory. As Turkish reveals rich agreement morphology, where verbs agree with their subjects in number and person, in certain cases, the pronominal subjects are not overtly expressed. Within the generative grammar, such cases are analyzed as having an empty category pro in their subject positions. Thus, as Turkish allows its subjects to remain unexpressed, it has been widely referred as a pro-drop language within the Government and Binding Framework (Kornfilt 1984, En9 1986, bzsoy 1987). Analyzing the discourse dependent distribution of overt pronouns in Turkish, where they bear topic (or possibly focus) status, this study presents a non-pro-drop account of Turkish. It claims that overt pronouns are pragmatically conditioned pronouns, whose presence or absence ¥'rithin a particular structure is solely determined by discourse. Thus, it discusses that overt pronouns are not base-generated in [Spec, VP] as subjects, but in a higher position in the structure, i.e. within the C system. Based on the fact that the presence of agreement morphology is sufficient to establish the referent of the subject in Turkish, it is also claimed that the agreement morphology which is considered to be pronominal in nature under the current analysis, is assumed to be the VP-internal subject in Turkish, base generated in [Spec, VP], but then gets cliticized to the verbal complex at a morphological structure level (Marantz and Halle 1993). Thus, considering overt pronouns to be pragmatically conditioned pronouns which have topic ( or focus) status and assuming the agreement morphology to be a pronominal category which is base-generated as the VP-internal subject, this study presents a non-pro-drop analysis of Turkish.
