Özet (Çeviri)

ABSTRACT The present study examines the life and the teachings of one of the old Prophets, Shuaib, who was sent by God to the people of Midian, which is also called Thicket, with speacial reference to the Quran and Islamic exegetical literature. In the first chapter, a berief information concerning the geneology of Şhuaib is given. The chapter also discusses the historical and geographical environment in which Shuaib lived. It is established that Midian was the capital city of the centers set up in the region which includes the north-east sides of the Arabian Peninsula as well as the north-east coasts of Red Sea and the places between Hejaz and Palestine. Another point derived from the research in this regard is that the present Akaba had been established in place of Midian. The second chapter is devoted primarily to the beginning of the prophetic mission of Shuaib and his relations with his father in law, Moses, and the men of Midian. This is followed by a brief account of the economic and commercial state of Midian. It appears that the people of Midian were very rich and wealthy and the reason of their richness comes from the illegitimate trade. This chapter also deals with the delicate methods which Shuaib applied in his prophetic call, as well as the reactions of the men of Midian. It is argued that Shuaib spared no effort in establishing the Tawheed (oneness of God) and putting their illegitimate trade and other immoralities an end, but a few people accepted his case. Most of them seems to have rejected his call insisting upon their ancestors' tradition. The last chapter focuses upon the lessons which can be gained from the exemplary behaviour of Shuaib. It appears that there are a lot to learn from his struggle and teachings in the field of belief, worship, moral, law and culture. At the end some concluding remarks are made, and the dimensions of the future scholarly studies in the same or similar subject-matter are mentioned. 45
