SUMMARY Torture which has been practiced with the aims like receiving information, ensuring obedience, or punishing can be seen in every country's history from time to time. In addition to the physical effects, psychological effects of torture upon the individuals have been determined. As a result of the researches in this subject, it has been stressed that depression and anxiety are seen at tortured persons. Twenty-six persons who have applied to the Ankara Treatment and Rehabilitation Center of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey constitute the universe of this research. Twenty-five persons who had been tortured in Turkey and went abroad, constitute the refugee sample. The levels of depression, conditional perpetual anxiety, helplessness, hopelessness of these persons have been compared with those of the control group, and Beck Depression Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Depressive Attribution Scale, Conditional-Perpetual Anxiety Inventory have been used as the means of collecting data. 48Variance analysis and T-test have been used as statistical method. The depressions of the refugees, and the depression points of students who constitute the control group, showed important differences withg that of the doctors who an constitute the control group. Again, the conditional-perpetual anxiety of the refugee group showed important differences with that of the doctors who constitute the control group. Besides, in the research held in Turkey, no important difference between the depression and conditional anxiety points of the sample group was found; however, it was determined that the perpetual anxiety of the sample group showed important differences with that of the control group.
