KIRMACI, İ. (1995) : Modelling of Traffic Forecasts. Dokuz Eylül University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Izmir. In Partial Fulfillment of Master of Sciences Degree in Civil Engineering. ABSTRACT The demands of human beings and the rapid development of automobile industry have forced the highway and traffic engineer to keep up with new developments. Parallel to technological developments, the geometrical characteristics of the road also need to be improved to respond to the above mentioned developments. The demand of the road users is to travel on a road with satisfactory geometrical characteristics and with a properly designed pavement. Such a road provides people with a fast, safe, comfortable and economical transportation. From the economical point of view, the main principle in highway engineering is to design a road to respond best to all needs during its service life. For this reason, during the planning stage it should be considered carefully that the geometrical characteristics of roads should not become inadequate after some time with the increasing traffic volumes. Additionally, in order to be economical, these characteristics are suggested not to have higher standards than necessary. After an urban road is designed and constructed, new housing and industrial sites alongside the road appear and the costs of land increases tremendously. Therefore, such factors should be carefully studied during the design process. If this cannot be done the new road may become inefficient in a short time with the increasing traffic and if this happens it would be very difficult and expensive to change some geometrical characteristics and to widen the road later. Hence, in the first planing stage the forecast of the future traffic which will use the road in question plays a very important role. VII
