Özet (Çeviri)
The thesis aims at proposing an alternative history of Turkish cinema by questioning the dominant modes of thought and methods of research. As the object of study I have chosen an overlooked area in studies on national cinemas, that of international films exhibited within a specific location and remakes, challenging the divisions between national and transnational, as well as major and minor works. The first part of the dissertation deals with the ways in which the international films had been exhibited and received in cross-cultural context. In this part, the cultural adaptation processes in which the international films were modified and translated into the local context are evaluated. The thesis also aims to discuss how international films are consumed by different audiences, and their role in construction of cultural identity and national cinema in Turkey. The first part focuses on two specific cases: Egyptian and Hollywood cinemas, as competing alter egos of Turkish cinema. The specific historical, political and social contexts in which these alter egos emerged, and the popular and intellectual discourses that tend to define them are also analysed in this part. The second part focuses on the remade movies that are closely linked with the process of adaptation and translation discussed in the first part. The analysis of remakes aims at exploring the hybrid nature of these products, rather than evaluating them in the context of such binary oppositions like `originality versus imitation?, `indigenous versus foreign?. In this new axis, the thesis tend to take the socio-cultural context of both source and target texts into account. Such a cross-cultural reinterpretation involves an analysis of respective historical, social and economic conditions of production and reception. This part consists of the study of three different genres in Turkish cinema: melodrama, costume drama and children?s films. Finally, the reasons behind such processes of remaking and re-presenting are discussed. Here, the specific role of these practices in mediating competing cultural discourses on modernity and modernisation, and the ways in which the effects of modernity in Turkey were reflected, rejected or negotiated within these practices are evaluated.
