The aim of this laboratory study was to investigate the effect of waste activated sludge on solids removal in primary settlement. The characteristics of domestic sewage, activated sludge, and sedimentation were reviewed in order to provide a more fundamental basis for understanding the removal efficiency during the sedimentation of a mixture of sewage and activated sludge. In the settlement of sewage, the removal efficiency can be different at the same suspended solid concentration because of the varying content of suspended solids which are settleable. However, the general trend was that the removal efficiency was high at higher initial suspended solid concentration. Different sewage works would give different removal efficiencies at the same suspended solid concentration because of the different settling properties of the sewage solids. Sewage contains fairly constant concentrations of non-settleable solids. Activated sludge is flocculent in nature and the settling characteristics of activated sludges may be different at the same suspended solid concentration.The solids removal efficiency in the settle-ment of primary sewage was increased by the addition of waste activated sludge. The increase in efficiency was found to be proportional to the volume of waste activated sludge added. The solids removal efficiency was found to be high at higher initial suspended solid concentrations of activated sludge or raw" sewage. It was found that the amount of suspended solid in the surface layer after settlement for two hours was increased by the addition of septic activated sludge. The increase of suspended solid in the surface layer was proportional to the volume of septic activated sludge added.
