The purpose of this research proposal is to make recommendations for the treatment of depression for children ages 7 to 12 years old. Early onset of depression has deleterious consequences for children of various developmental stages and is a strong predictor of future recurrences, and other non-depressive disorders. The existing treatment modalities for childhood depression seem to address only one or two of the several etiological factors involved in depression, and thus seem to be limited in scope. Integrative models of treatment for adult depression are not necessarily applicable to children, as developmental differences in cognitive skills and age related stressors might make adult models inappropriate. Thus, there is a gap in the scientific world regarding the treatment of depression in children, which creates an urgent need for the creation of developmentally sensitive treatment methods for childhood depression. Therefore, the purpose of this clinical research will be to identify factors that put young children at risk for depression, evaluate current interventions used to address childhood depression, and offer an integrative approach adapted from existing integrative therapies intended to treat adult depression.
