Factors affecting motivation of Turkish construction site operatives have been investigated to succeed the aim of the study. The research was conducted through collecting data with using questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was applied to 71 construction site operatives in three construction companies that performing in the Turkish construction industry. Respondents participated to the survey with ranking the motivating and de-motivating factors according to their past and current experiences. With using the relative importance index technique the identified motivating and de-motivating factors were ranked for further analysis and discussion. Based on the survey data, motivating factors were ranked in ascending order such as: pay raises, good supervisor or leader, bonuses, comradeship among co-workers, benefits, being infonned, job satisfaction, job security, feeling of accomplishment, pleasant work itself, opportunities for promotion and compressed work week. De-motivating factors were also listed in ascending order such as: bad supervisor, insignificant pay raise, no comradeship among co-workers, insignificant bonuses, bad benefits, job dissatisfaction, not being informed, no feeling of accomplishment, no job security, no opportunities for promotion, unpleasant work itself and no compressed work week. The results confirmed that there is no significant difference between motivating and de-motivating factors. The research has concluded that the companies should pay more importance to increase site operatives' motivation for increasing their performance and productivity which will be beneficial for organisafional goals.
