The number of divorced couples in Turkey has increased considerably during the last decade. Although a number of studies have been conducted regarding divorce in Turkey, none of them have directly aimed at scrutinising what divorced individuals experience, percept and feel after divorcing. Moreover, changes in the social environment after divorce are remarkable for divorced individuals. In this regard, the first aim of the study was to comprehend the social experiences and perceptions of divorced individuals during their post-divorce period. Furthermore, many studies in the literature tend to overgeneralise reasons for divorce, such as an“incompatibility of temperament”. In this respect, the second aim of this research is to attain a closer look at the underlying causes of divorce. What are the impetuses in making the decision to divorce one's spouse? Is it really individualistic, or do some social effects and pressures play a role in divorce? Are increasing divorce numbers coincidental or are they related with some social changes and patterns? In order to scrutinise these notions face-to-face, interviews with 15 participants, 8 women and 7 men, has been conducted. Findings will present probed information about what kind of experiences and hardships divorced individuals have encountered in their social environment. Moreover, detailed knowledge about the main catalyst that led to their divorce will be stated. Additionally, the paper will try to illustrate how the participants felt after the divorce and what their expectations in life are, now that they have divorced their ex-partner.
