Özet

SUMMARY This reseacrh has been done to investigate manual dexterity performances of mentally retarded children aged between eight an twelve and to determine the difference between sexes and age groups. The sample group was consisted of 88 educable mentally retarded children who attend“Çağdaş Eğitim ve Uygulama Okulu”and“Ulus Eğitim ve Uygulama Okulu”. In order to asses the manual dexterity of these children "Learning Teaching Motor Developmental Scale, Portage Early Childhood Period Education Control Test and some items from Minnesota Rate of Manipulation Test and Denver Developmental Screening Test which are supposed to tackle fine motor development are used (93). Besides, descriptive information about children and families are collected. Most of the mentally retarded children in this group were aged between 11-12 (31%); then for 10-11 age group (28%); 9-10 age group (22%); 8-9 age group (19%). The majority of mentally retarded children of the sample group has been due to perinatal risk factors (31%). It has been pointed out that prenatal risk factors (25%), postnatal risk factors (23%) and unknown factors (16%). Most of the mentally retarded children in this sample group have one or two brothers/sisters at the rate of 34% and 32%. The rate of being only child or having four brothers/sisters is 7%. 115The mothers of these mentally retarded children take place in the age group between 31-40 at the rate of 56%. Moreover the mothers are mostly housewives and primary school graduates. The fathers are aged between 31-40 at the age of 64%. It has been observed that mothers and fathers of these children have nearly same age. The fathers are mostly laboures (at the rate of 35%) and self-employed people (at the rate of 41%). It has been observed that the fathers are who are primary school graduates are more than the other groups (at the rate of 66%). As a result of statistical analysis, manual dexterity performance difference has not been found between mentally retarded girls and boys except some abilities at some age groups. Manual dexterity performance difference among age gorups is significant at all ages as statistical data (p
