Özet (Çeviri)
This thesis uses the oldest Mesopotamian myth of the“Descent of Inanna”as a paradigm for comparing, contrasting and arguing for the profound archetypal value of the novels Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and The Autobiography of a Turkish Girl by Reşat Nuri Güntekin. Derived from such an angle of analysing the two works, this study also aims to tackle the on-going debate regarding the relationship between literature, more specifically the Novel as Epic genre and mythology or mythological models. Therefore, far from arguing for the novels signing a“ death sentence”for mythology, the present thesis is centred around the concept of myths being merely de-constructed, re-created and metamorphosed in the new attire offered by the epic genre. The second chapter displays the consilience between feminist-archetypal criticism, Jungian criticism and comparatism as the theoretical spine of the study. The third chapter employs a historicist perspective, concentrating on the social and political background of Victorian England and Kemalist Turkey, the two eras and countries to which the novels belong. Chapter four and five focus on the pilgrimage towards Selfhood initiated by the protagonists Jane Eyre and Feride Nizamettin, as they follow closely into the steps of goddess Inanna, their mythological predecessors. The argument of the conclusion is that by acknowledging the connection Novel – as epic and feminine form par excellénce and mythology, as well as considering the capacity of any novel to nurture, feed, attend to and socialize, mythological patterns are kept alive, albeit in a convoluted shape.
