The competition between the companies, drive them to find new ways to achieve competitive advantage over their competitors. One of the ways to achieve this advantage is innovation. The creation of value through innovation gives the companies this advantage but not all of them become successful in this challenge. The process of new product development bears lots of risks and these risks have to be managed throughout the project. In this study secondary data is gathered to create an understanding of risk management tools and techniques and new product development processes. After examining the differences between these tools and techniques and processes, two case studies will be given to demonstrate real product development processes and a thus a chance to examine the tools and techniques used in these projects. After examining these case studies the study showed that the risk management activities support the new product development processes but there are key aspects that require full attention of the managers. The identification and quantification of the risks make the risks clear but if the mitigation plans are not in place for the risks the project can go into unexpected directions. The decisions made during the project also have a key role on the risks, if the decisions are made based in the risks the project is more likely to encounter the problems caused by the foreseen risks.
