Özet (Çeviri)
Growing casualties and the increasing cost of violent conflicts have caused conflict resolution to become a more popular field in international relations and political science. Since the Cold War negotiations have become the preferred option for governments to reach peace. Military solutions or even victories do not solve the trouble in long the term. Transforming intractable conflicts into non-violence necessitate great effort and forbearance. Dialogue with the adversary and democratic solutions are the best way to solve any conflict and build durable peace. The Northern Irish example is examined here as a model to solve disputes and reach succesful democratic solutions. Currently, Turkey has been endeavouring to terminate its protracted conflict through negotiations. This dissertation examines different stages of the peace process, focusing on the Northern Irish and Turkish cases. It starts by explaining the key concepts, theories, and approaches in conflict resolution, and the main trends. It then investigates the different stages from pre-negotiations to peace agreement. It considers the causes of Northern Ireland and Turkey in depth and compares and contrasts them, to see what lessons Turkey can learn from the Northern Irish example. It concludes that with time and with solution-oriented approaches on both sides, all conflicts are solvable.
