Özet (Çeviri)

This study has explored if the functioning section of the Model Disability Survey (MDS) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank (WB) could be used to assess the understanding of disability in one's everyday life. More specifically, this study aimed to determine whether the items of the MDS are understood in the same way across healthy individuals and people with health conditions, including the identification of the survey's potential sources of error. For this reason a cognitive testing interview has been conducted to 16 individuals (8 healthy people and 8 people with health conditions) as a means identify responders' source of answers and compare the concept of their responses. The data analysis was based on the approach of Knafl et al., (2007). The results indicated that healthy individuals and people with health conditions have provided similar patterns of answers across all items of the questionnaires. Several differences emerged between individuals with physical and mental health conditions as people in those groups provided answers disorder-specifically. The results also showed that the MDS performs well as questions aiming to assess the capacity and performance qualifiers have been answered in the way they have been designed to. In addition, no errors have been identified from participants, as all understood the questions in the same way and in the way that the MDS has designed it. The results are discussed in relation to the understandability of the survey items across the different groups of participants.
