Özet (Çeviri)
This study investigated cross-cultural differences in depression, somatization and anxiety between Turkish and American participants, as well as the association of negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE), emotion regulation and coping strategies with symptoms in both cultures. I also examined education level in the Turkish sample and acculturation among Americans as predictors of symptoms. Turkish participants were 50 college students and 48 people who attended fewer years of education. American participants were 102 college students. Turkish participants scored significantly higher in symptoms of distress and in avoidant coping than Americans did. Correlational analysis revealed that higher levels of NMRE were positively associated with use of cognitive reappraisal and active and avoidant coping strategies, and were negatively associated with symptoms of distress and use of suppression and emotion-focused coping strategies. Active coping strategies did not mediate the relationship between NMRE and symptoms of distress. In the Turkish sample, active coping and the interaction between education level and active coping predicted somatization and anxiety. Depression was predicted by active coping, the interaction between education level and active coping and the interaction between education level and NMRE. Only NMRE was a significant independent predictor of symptoms of distress in the American sample. Overall, this study found cross-cultural differences in symptoms of distress and in the use of avoidant coping strategies. The results support the more traditional view in the cross-cultural psychopathology literature that cultural differences in psychopathology do exist and that non-Westem cultures are more prone to distress.
