This research project has investigated the factors affecting the alcoholic beverage industry in Turkey. The alcoholic beverage industry in Turkey has been going through significant changes because of the current government's alcohol – control policies. As a result, alcoholic beverage companies are struggling to survive and compete in such a complex and uncertain business environment. The ultimate reason for undertaking this research is to examine in depth the factors that have made the industry extremely complex and uncertain. More importantly, this research project also serves as a guideline for alcoholic beverage companies that seek to operate in Turkey. This research project has sought to explore the underlying reasons and factors affecting the alcohol industry through gaining a rich and deeper understanding of the subject matter. Therefore, the study was carried out through in – depth interviews where respondents are asked questions regarding the current state of the alcoholic beverage industry in Turkey. The Turkish alcoholic beverage market differs from most of those in the West because of the impact of the religion of Islam. The determinants of demand for consumption of alcoholic beverages are price, consumers' income, changing customer preferences, health awareness campaigns and so forth. However, there is no doubt that the religion of Islam is one of the most influential determinants of demand for alcoholic beverages. As a result of strict alcohol – control policies implemented by the government of Turkey, the illicit alcohol market has increased within the country. This not only damages the sales and reputation of companies but also threatens the lives of many consumers. Alcohol advertising bans, restrictions on alcohol licensing, increasing excise have impacted the way companies operate in the industry. The competition within the industry has intensified and the existence of market entry barriers has made the alcoholic beverage market less attractive for entrants.
