Each Abrahamic faith has an account of Jesus' crucifixion and death. While the Jews considered Jesus as heretical thus they thought that he deserved to die and they succeeded to crucify him, for the Christians, Jesus is the Son of God and it was an eternal plan of God to let Jesus to die on the cross for the sake of the sins of all human kind. However, as for the Muslims, Jesus is the prophet and the word of God, the Jews intended to crucify and kill Jesus, but they did not succeed since God has raised Jesus up (4:157). As a consequence, the Muslims view of Jesus' crucifixion and death contradict with both the Jews and Christians view. The Qur'an refers to the crucifixion and death of Jesus in a few verses. However, there have been massive studies on this issue in the Islamic tradition. On the one hand, Jesus' story had been taken into consideration in the“tales of the prophets”, on the other hand, the Sufi and Shi'i Muslims had an account of Jesus. Additionally, Hadith tradition has shaped Muslim understanding of Jesus' story. Finally, the commentators of the Qur'an have placed themselves into different positions in terms which source they used and how they interpreted the verses related to Jesus. It seems that understanding of Jesus in Islam is essentially based on not fully the Qur'an, but stories narrated by extra-Islamic sources. In the classical period of tafsir tradition, that kind of sources was not questioned, but in the modern period due to fundamental changes, these kinds of sources were not accepted, but actually their interpretation remains more or less the same with some exceptions.
