This dissertation seeks to explore similarities and differences of conceptualization of climate change between British and Chinese people along with how this concept engaged with their environmental concern and feeling of responsibility. 108 British and Chinese participants were recruited via an online survey from different mailing groups and through snowball sampling. This survey included 6 open-ended questions about causes, effects, solutions and responsibility of climate change. These were followed by the New Environmental Paradigm Scale (Dunlap, 2000) and the Responsibility Scale (Whitmarsh, 2008). Qualitative data was subjected to thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and scales were analysed by SPSS. After analysis three themes are identified. The first is overconsumption. The second denotes if one is more powerful or cause more harm it stands they are more responsible for reducing climate change. The third theme is the notion that as a result of temperature rises, low-lying countries and poorer countries will be more affected by climate change. Two different emphases are explored between groups. The British participants have a tendency to think it is too late to prevent climate change and have more catastrophic expectations of the future (while the Chinese participants do not). Alternatively Chinese participants consider that their own country will be affected by climate change (while the British participants do not). These results are discussed with literature, including attribution theory (Weiner, 1985) and the 'othering' phenomenon (Said, 2003). The quantitative results showed that British participants feel more individually responsible than Chinese participants and Chinese people evaluate Earth to be more vulnerable. These results are explained by cultural differences, and finally, how data is connected with each is discussed.
