Studies looking at testicular self-examination have mostly been correlational in design, and focused on socio-cognitive factors. There is evidence that people who believe they will feel reassured if they perform testicular self-examination are more likely to do so (i.e., anticipated relief). Our aim was to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between anticipate relief and testicular self-examination. We aimed to manipulate anticipated relief using a mere measurement intervention and observe its effect on self-examination intentions and behaviour in the one-month follow up period. Participants were randomised into three conditions (pure control, Theory of Planned Behaviour control or anticipated relief). An ANOVA revealed no significant differences between the intentions of the three conditions. The anticipated relief group was split into two categories; high vs. low anticipated relief. An ANCOVA revealed that the high anticipated relief group had significantly stronger intentions than the pure control group. A chi2 revealed no significant differences in behavioural intentions. A second chi2 for behaviour could not be conducted, as the sample did not have enough power. The results and implications are discussed.
