Today's fast moving and highly competitive environment has increased the importance of knowledge intensive sectors. This has consequently led to the rise of new form of organizations called as“knowledge intensive firms”and new type of employee referred as“knowledge worker.”In these organizations knowledge workers not only own the means of production but the competitive advantage also mainly depends upon the performance of these workers. Thus, the control power in knowledge intensive organizations is not in the hands of management. This seemingly contradicts with the manager's traditional directive style of leadership and necessitates new leadership roles for managers. This dissertation investigates the leadership role and competencies of managers in knowledge intensive departments. Interviews with 8 participants show that participative leadership was mainly favored. At the same time it was unearthed that problem solving and having technical knowledge as well as sharing that knowledge are perceived as the main leadership competencies. Further, it was found that having rhetorical skills in customer focused departments are also seen as essential leadership competencies of managers.
