With its semi-colonized status on the eve of World War I, the Ottoman Empire was politically too weak to endure the Great Powers' pressures. The lack of wise ruling cadres and the subsequent embracement of partnership with Germany took the Empire into the war. The Empire fought on numerous fronts from the Galicia to Persia, from the Caucasus to the Palestine. Of these, the Caucasus Front was perhaps one of the most important and strategic one for the Ottomans. Not only did it constitute the initial war aims of the Ottoman Empire, but also it became the only outlet where the Ottoman Empire's wartime efforts would pay off right after the Russian Revolution. While the Empire failed on almost all other fronts, it was unevenly successful in the Caucasus Front by the time of the Armistice of Mundros in 1918. In the end, however, although a century-old Russo-Ottoman rivalry of the Caucasus borderland waned and disappeared, the expansionist Ottoman Empire was checked and forced to agree with the status quo of the 1878.
