The influence of adding carbon nanotubes or activated carbon (up to 0.7 wt.%) on the thermoelectric properties of a series of nanostructured Bi1‐xSbx alloys (Sb content in the range between 10 mol% and 20 mol%) was investigated. Two strategies for synthesizing these material compounds were followed, specifiable by the resulting homogeneity. In the first method both materials are mixed after a ball‐milling process, leading to an inhomogeneity of the incorporated inclusion material, which tends to form isolated agglomerations like dots in the matrix material. In the second approach matrix and inclusion material were ball‐milled simultaneously, leading to a high degree of homogeneity. Due to a more pronounced enhancement of the electric transport properties, the first synthesis approach is more suitable for optimization, but is also limited by a more fragile structure. Nonetheless both strategies are capable of achieving higher figures of merit by optimizing all three thermoelectric parameters, but to a different extend. The reduction of thermal conductivity was achieved by introducing phase boundaries between matrix and inclusion material acting as extrinsic scattering centers for phonons. Both synthesis strategies lead to the abrasion and deposition of carbon‐containing particles originating from the inclusion material. These abrasion particles occur in different extent and lead to diverse effects within the sample structure. Moreover, the optimization of the Seebeck coefficient may be attributed to electron‐filtering mechanisms related to those carbon particles. It should be noted that the beneficial effect of these abrasions particles differ strongly between both syntheses strategies, where the first strategy shows higher figures of merit and improved electric transport properties than the second one. By means of the first strategy it was possible to obtain a maximal figure of merit of ZT (300 K) = 0,47 (for Bi0,87Sb0,13 + 0,5 wt.% AC).
