6. ABSTRACT Poetry arguments of the Period of the Republican Literature started when Ahmet Haşim published his article“ Meaning in Poetry ”in Dergâh in 1921. Later Ahmet Hasim published this article again as an introduction to“ Piyâle ”(1926). By 1941 there had been lots of arguments about poets and poetry during the Period of Republican Literature. However, these arguments were oriented by not only articles written about poetry, but by evaluations made about various poets' works. The afore stated article of Ahmet Haşim is some sort of a battle against the canonized understanding of the time. A similar case to that of Ahmet Haşim was witnessed in Garip which was published by Orhan Veli Kanık, Oktay Rifat Horozcu and Melih Cevdet Anday in collaboration. Introduction of this book has been regarded as a manifestation that comprehends all constituents of poetry. This introduction tittled“Garip”was published as“Of Poetry”in Varlık in 1939 but it had not been controversial. Besides these two remarkable cases, lots of arguments about poets, groups of poets, poetry and its constituents are observed. Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Necip Fazıl Kısakürek, Nazım Hikmet Ran and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar attracted attention and their works had been subjected to arguments between 1921 and 2371941. Beş Hececiler and Yedi Mesaleciler are the evident groups of authors of the stated period. Especially the understanding of poetry and principles of Yedi Meşaleciler had been praised and criticized. Bes Hececiler were not regarded as a different group of poets and their poetry was evaluated poet by poet since they were the continuation of National Literature Movement. These arguments concerning poetry determined and shaped the stylistic and thematic constituents of poetry. Arguments of the style are oriented around verse, language and rhyme, and arguments of theme are developed on subject matter and content, individual and social poetry, and national and non- national poetry. Just like it is in the arguments developed around poets and groups, it is clear that ideological, political, social and cultural changes of the time influenced and determined the arguments taking place around poetry and its constituents. It is possible to say that poetry arguments of 1921 to 1941 gave a new and different direction concerning form and content to the poetry of the Republican Literature.Tracing the development of this new poetry is possible only by observing and evaluating these arguments. 238
