Surrealism had always being criticized as a movement of art while surrealists had claimed that it was just an experiment of life and a psycihal attitude against the given conditions of social and political structure. They were against the values which prevented everyone from living free and satisfying lives. It was a manifesto of freedom to the rest of the world. Introduction part of this study deals with historical conditions that gave birth to the surrealism. What was surrealism and who were the surrealists and what did they want to do? The movement of Dada and the early surrealists are among the main topics of this part. The relation of surrealism and psychoanalysis is the main subject of chapter 1. What kind of technics were used in the works of surrealists? Are there any similarities between the film and dream? In relation with these questions Freudian notions and Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud is take part in this chapter too. Finally chapter 2 deals with surrealist cinema and Luis Bunuel. As the master of surrealist cinema from 1928 to 1977 Luis Bunuel and his masterpieces are the main topics of this chapter. This chapter tries to explain the difference and relation between his early surrealist works and his last films. The anthropological and psychanalytic discourses in his films are take part in this chapter too.
