AY Mahmut, Some Adverse Thoughts on the Subjects of pertaining to Belief in Ottomans between the 14th century and the 17th century, Supervised by professor M. Sait YAZICIO?LU, Submitted to the University of Ankara, 1995. 8+158 ABSTRACT Hawing the liberty of thinking and belief is the assurance of the community development. It is fairly important to avoid the troubles and mistakes by criticizing the thoughts and regulations in the community and hawing the sense of criticism dominant in the community. The veriety of thoughts is mostly important for people to realize the facts.. The concepts- of the liberty of thinking and belief which are gradually getting much attention and always talked about have been studied by keeping the general structure of the Ottoman Empire in mind. It may be a liberty to defend both the truth and the falseness for reason in terms of thought. If the individual experiences the falseness on his own in daily life there will be no restrictions. In the even that the individual makes others experience the falseness there will appear some obligations and responsibilities. The situation is same in belief. Although the Sultans of Ottoman at first had a certain understanding they tolerated different religious understanting and interpretation. It is obvious that some members of tariqas and people who asserted the adverse thoughts and beliefs on common religious understanding were persecuted in different periods of Ottomans. The adverse actions which were pertaining to eventhough belief between the 14th century and 17th century have some similarities these actions should be considered by their own characteristics.The Şeyh Bedrettin action which has been taken as a sample in our study is not primarly religious, but is an adverse action which has the politicial, social and economic reasons and characteristics. The religious motives have been used in the action. The execution of Molla Lütfi which has been taken as a second sample action in the study is neither a revolt to the political and governmental system nor a punishment of the governmental pertaining to belief due to the heresy. In fact, the hostility, tealousy, and some other attitudes of the scholars have a great importance in this action. In the action of Molla Kabız, both the Judgement Jury of the Ottoman Empire and Molla Kabız did not think appropriately to Quran. Both sides had a competition of Superiority. It is not appropriate to Quran to have such a superiority Competition among prophets. One of the remarkable points in this action is to express the adverse thoughts freely which are common and accepted by the people of sunnis in the Ottoman Community. Moreover, this action proves how the common law and the Sultan are affective on the judgment jury and the religious bureaucracy while judging the cases. Another sample is the Şeyh İsmail Maşuki's action. The action which seems to be against the government has been put down by the state. We can not say that the thoughts and beliefs of Şeyh İsmail Maşuki are revealed religious. However, the attitudes towards the thoughts and beliefs of the state are not Quranic.
