Folk dance, which is one of the cultural products which arise as a natural conseqence of man's relationship with nature and society, constitutes the subject matter of this thesis. What is attempted in this thesis, entittled“A Systematic Analysis of the Folk Dances of the Adana Region”, is to fill an obvious gap in ethnological research with the guidance of an understanding of scientific method acquired through a long and toilsome process of learning. The introductory section of the thesis consists of theoretical discussions concerning dance. The emphasis here is on the culture of dancing with special attention to the origin of dance and its function, folk dance, and the folk dances of the Adana region. In addition, the theoreical frame of the subject is established through a discussion of various theories of dance, and the structural dynamics of folk dance. An exposition of the method and techniqes used in the thesis is given after an introduction to the historical, ecological, economical, and socio-cultural structure of the Adana region. The aim of the thesis is to arrive at a synthesis by establishing connections between regional folk dances and some cultural theories through an analysis of the data collected during field work in the light of the insights offered within the theoretical framework.
