Özet
İslam astronomları Ptolemaios'un Almagest'inin çelişkilerle dolu olduğunu gösterdiler ve Ptolemaios'un gezegen modellerindeki fiziksel hatalara değindiler. Bunun sonucunda, İslam dünyasında XIII. yüzyılın başlangıcında Ptolemaios'un gezegen modellerine karşı alternatif modellerin tasarlandığı birçok çalışma yapıldı. İslam astronomları tarafından Ptolemaios astronomisinin problemleriyle başa çıkabilecek matematiksel modeller üretildi. Örneğin, Ptolemaios'un ekuantının kullanımına karşı çıktılar ve onun yerine Tûsî çifti ve 'Urdî yardımcı teoremi gibi matematiksel araçlar ürettiler. Kopernik de İslam astronomları gibi, Ptolemaios'un gezegen modellerindeki aynı fiziksel hatalara değindi. O da Ptolemaios'un ekuantının kullanımına karşı çıktı. Kopernik'in kendi sistemini oluşturmak için kullandığı matematiksel modeller aslında İslam atronomları tarafından geliştirilmişti. Ancak Kopernik farklı bir sonuç buldu ve Güneş merkezli sistemi kurdu. Bu tez, Kopernik'in Güneş merkezli sisteminin gelişiminde bu matematiksel modellerin rolünden bahseder. Tezin amacı, Kopernik ve İslam astronomları arasındaki bağlantının genel bir değerlendirmesini vermektir.

Islamic astronomers realized Ptolemaios' Almagest is full of contradictions and they adressed physical problems of Ptolemy's planetary models. As a result of this, a number of works that proposed alternatives to Ptolemy's planetary models, appeared beginning of the thirteenth century in Islamic World. A series of mathematical models were produced by them to dealt with the problems of Ptolemaic astronomy. For example, Islamic astronomers objected to Ptolemy's use of equant and they developed mathematical tools such as Tûsî couple and 'Urdî lemma instead of equant. Copernicus was stressed by the same physical problems of Ptolemy's planetary models as Islamic astronomers. And he objected to Ptolemy's use of equant too. Copernicus used a number of mathematical models to create his own system. And these mathematical models had originally been developed by Islamic astronomers. But he reached different conclusions and he established heliocentric system. This thesis is an attempt to deal with the role of these mathamatical models in the development of Copernicus' heliocentric cosmology. The purpose of this thesis is to give an overview of connections between Copernicus and Islamic astronomers.
