BENZEDEN) SUMMARY Flood frequency analysis is one of the methods of achieving benefits through forecasting in the design of structures and reducing damages caused by floods. Regional flood frequency analysis gives an aid not only in estimating the design events efficiently but also in providing design event magnitudes at sites where no hydrologic information is available. In this study, the regional analysis of annual peak floods at the West Mediterranean river basins has been investigated. Analysis of available data at 48 gauging stations has shown that the project area which is almost 48,132 km2 should be divided into three subregions, namely the Lower-West Mediterranean, the Upper-West Mediterranean and the Antalya subregion. Regional relationships of mean annual flood yield-drainage area and coefficient of skew-coefficient of variation are examined. The results of these analyses revealed that there exists two statistically meaningfull relationships of mean flood-yield-drainage area parallel to each other; and a unique relationship between skewness and variation coefficients relatively close to that for Gamma distribution. After removal of the gauging stations which do not satisfy regional homogeneity conditions, regional values of variation and skewness coefficients are estimated, and regional frequency curves of both subregion have been derived. This preliminary study should be proceeded by further research, When this is achieved, it will be possible to design hundreds of structures in efficient and economical manner related to the development plans of water and land resources of the project area.
