Özet
91 SUMMARY In this study, the roots of the eleven Rumex species growing in Turkey were studied with regard to chemotaxonomy and cytotoxicity. These species were: R. acetosella, R. alpinus, R. angustifolius subsp angustifolius, R. conglomeratus, R. crispus, R. dentatus subsp halacsyi, R. gracilescens, R. patientia, R. sanguineus, R. scutatus and R. tmoleus. Compounds, specific for Rumex species were identified whereas quantities of the main compounds were determined and discussed in relation with their morphology. Major substances identified were anthraquinones and tannins. Naphtalene derivatives were identified in 10 of the Rumex species except for R. tmoleus. 8 species were found to contain flavonoids. No definitive results were obtained about the presence of saponins and leucoanthocyanidols. Only one species contained anthocyanidol and coumarin whilst none of the species studied were found to contain iridoids and cardiac glycosides. The amount of tannins and flavonoids were established as 1.97-8.48 and 0.01-0.09 % alternatively. Some of the Rumex species studied (R. angustifolius subsp angustifolius, R. crispus, R. scutatus, R. patientia) showed high cytotoxic activity. Activity of the fractions obtained by polyamide coloumn chromatography of the methanolic extracts of the roots of R. scutatus (LC50=0.96 ug/ml) were determined by using brine shrimp assay method. Compounds, present in the active fractions were identified by colour reactions, TLC and HPLC. Determination of cytotoxic activity of the purified compounds showed that anthraquinone aglycons have high cytotoxic activity whereas anthraquinone glycosides and catechol have no activity.
