In recent years, mental health professionals have started investigating the value of mindfulness meditation in the lives of individuals who suffer from substance use disorders. The present paper aims to present a systematical review for the comparativeness effectiveness of mindfulness therapy and treatment as usual on substance use disorders. The overall search for literature review obtained approximately 859 abstracts and there were 29 full texts screened after eliminating irrelevant records and same studies. In the final review, there were only 9 studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. They include 4 randomized controlled trials and 4 controlled non-randomized trials and one quasi-experimental study. Although conclusive data are not available for the effectiveness of mindfulness therapy on substance use disorders, existing data reports the efficacy of mindfulness therapy. Participants who are in the mindfulness therapy group had significant reduction in their alcohol and drug use when compared to treatment as usual group. There are significant limitations in terms of methodology and generalizability issues in the most studies. Future investigations should concentrate on the expanding sample sizes and populations and additional methods for improving the outcomes.
