SUMMARY KOÇ, Mehmet Akif, Aisha Abd al-Rahman and Her Role in the Science of the Qur'an Commentary. M. A. thesis, supervised by Prof. İsmail Cerrahoğlu, submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences, Ankara University. Aisha Abd al-Rahman (Bint al-Shati) was born in 1913 in Dimyat which is a coastal city on the Northern fringes of Egypt. She was interested in social sciences since her age of childhood. She completed her Ph. D. in 1950 and edited“Risâlat al-Gufran”which was written by Ebu al-Alâ al-Maarrî as her doctoral dissertation. Tâhâ Huseyn who was famous in Arabic literature supervised Aisha Abd al-Rahman's doctorate. Aisha Abd al-Rahman with her forty works in various fields of social sciences earned a good reputation in the Arab world. Various studies on her works in the Western world indicate that her reputation is also accepted in the West. Aisha Abd al-Rahman follows the method of induction in interpreting the verses of Qur'an. According to her interpretation, the Qur'an has a special language and special mode of explanation. So, a word in the Qur'an can not be explained by other words in Arabic. In order to interpret a word of the Qur'an, it is necessary, at first, to investigate the verses which include same word. By examining these verses, the meaning of the word can be underurood. Aisha Abd al-Rahman follows a critical approach and rejects the Qur'anic interpretations which are not in accordance with nature of human being. Some Arab scholars severely criticized her because of this critical approach to the traditional sources. She objects to both using of the bib:lical narratives in interpretation of the Qur'an and is again interpreting the verses which IX YÜKSEKİİBETli KUMLU DOKÜMAHTASYOH MERKEZ»II pertain to the invisible (al-ghayb). She also opposes the usage of scientific findings in the interpretation of the Qur'an. According to her, inferiority complex in the minds of muslims towards the developed West, supported the tendency of interpretation of the Qur'an with help of scientific findings. To say finally that, Aisha Abd al-Rahman tried to establish a correct understanding and interpretation of the Holy Qur'an. Putting aside her personal inclinations, she searces the literary and syclistic characteristics of the Qur'an in her academic works. On the other hand, she aimed at soluing the problems of the Muslim world with the interpretation of the Qur'an in her general works and articles.
