Özet (Çeviri)
Creativity is one of the key elements of education. Despite the popularity of creativity in the postmodern world, significance of creativity has not yet been fully understood in the Turkish educational system, with an unavoidable gap in the extant literature on Turkey. This is reinforced by the paucity of existing empirical and theoretic research on creativity in Turkey. This dissertation seeks to explore for the first time how creativity is perceived within the Turkish national educational system with reference to the dominant ideology of Kemalism and the Industrial revolution. Data were collected from secondary school students and teachers in three provinces of Turkey through a well-prepared questionnaire including both yes or no and open-ended questions. Findings indicate that creativity was regarded as crucial by the vast majority of participants, yet it was admitted that creativity is not given priority in schools under the existing national central curriculum. Despite exceptions, the Kemalist ideology was seen as a barrier to creativity in education, especially by Kurdish respondents. The imposition of a particular identity was also seen unacceptable by Kurdish participants, and even some Turkish participants alike. These issues, however, were still seen as sensitive topics which need to be investigated further. Considering the impact of the Industrial revolution, findings were generally consistent with the ideas/claims of some well-known educators such as Robinson, although there were some disagreements on issues such as wearing school uniform. This study recommends that related reforms should be implemented to lift the existing barriers both in political and educational sense so that students could discover their talents and thus be much more creative. It recommends further that future investigations are required to better understand the exclusion of Kurdish students in the Turkish educational system.
