Özet

ABSTRACT Nature and Education in Rousseau's Political Philosophy by Ayşe Sinirlioğlu There are two opposing views among inferpreters of Rousseau's political thought. VVhile the first line of argument portrays Rousseau as the advocate of a theory of freedom, the second interpretation sees him as a theorist of authoritarian rule. Moreover, some commentators consider The Second Discourse as an exposition of individualism and The Social Contract as a revelation of collectivism. They argue that Rousseau's three vvorks, The Second Discourse. Emile and The Social Contract. are inconsistent and contradictory. The basic aim of this dissertation is to defend Rousseau against those who attack him as being totalitarian and inconsistent. The unity of Rousseau's thought and vvorks compels us to study his conception of human nature and his educational ideas as forming the integral parts of his political philosophy. Therefore, this study aims at identifying and understanding the part played by the concept of human nature and education in Rousseau's political philosophy. l have analyzed The Social Contract in connection with The Second Discourse and Emile as the three vvorks together complement öne another. viiBen, bu üç eserde birleştirici bir tema olan özgürlük kavramını izini takip ederek Rousseau'nun düşüncesini tanımlayan şeyin tutarlılık olduğunu göstermeye çalıştım.
