According to Frank Jackson's knowledge argument, it is impossible to know phenomenological facts, such as what it is like to see red, solely based on objective information that is expressible in physical/functional terms, and this shows that physicalism is false. I argue that none of the standard physicalist responses in the literature to the knowledge argument works, and subjective physicalism, which states that phenomenal facts are physical facts that cannot be expressed in the language of physics, is the most promising physicalist response. However, existing subjective physicalist accounts are problematic, primarily because they fail to offer a conception of the physical that is acceptable for most physicalists. I explore several conceptions of the physical in the literature and identify three as the most plausible options, each of which captures a different physicalist intuition. I argue that, instead of posing the question in terms of the physicality of the mental, we should ask in what ways the mental is metaphysically extraordinary. I identify different dimensions of metaphysical extraordinariness and explore the implications of the knowledge argument to the metaphysical extraordinariness of the mental.
