Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the clinical characteristics of stroke patients who are prescribed orthosis and assistive device for ambulation. Secondly, we aimed to determine the characteristics of the rehabilitation programs of the patients who are prescribed orthosis and assistive device. Materials and Methods: Records of 473 patients diagnosed with stroke in the inpatient rehabilitation program were retrospectively reviewed. 348 patients, including 145 female (41.6%) and 203 male (58.4%) and meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Demographic and stroke-related clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. Brunnstrom motor recovery stage was used for lower extremity motor evaluation, and Functional Ambulation Scale was used for functional evaluation. Additional treatments in the rehabilitation program (robotic rehabilitation, balance training, botulinum toxin injection, etc.) were also recorded. Orthosis and assistive devices for ambulation prescribed to patients were recorded. The patients were divided into 2 main groups in terms of orthosis and assistive device use and each group was also divided into 3 subgroups as Group 1: those who can ambulate without need orthosis / assistive device, Group 2: those who are prescribed orthosis/assistive device for ambulation, Group 3: those who are not prescribed orthosis/assistive devices as they can not ambulate. Results: The mean age of the patients was 63,14±11,7 years, the mean duration from onset to hospitalization was 28,65±22,2 weeks and the mean length of hospital stay was 51,94±21,06 days. It was found that 43.4% of the patients with stroke were prescribed an orthosis and 50.3% were prescribed assistive device during the rehabilitation program. The most commonly used orthosis type was solid AFO, the assistive device type was tripot cane. Orthosis and assistive device prescribing ratios were higher in patients whose Brunnstrom recovery stage of lower extremity was ≥3 than the patients whose Brunnstrom recovery stage was <3 (p <0,05). The mean age of the patients in the Group 3 who are not prescribed orthosis due to not ambulating is higher than the other groups (p <0,05). Female ratio was higher in the Group 3 including the patients who are not prescribed orthosis/assistive device than the other groups (p <0,05). In Group 2, including patients who are prescribed orthosis/assistive device for ambulation the length of hospitalization and the ratio of recurrent hospitalization were statistically significantly higher (p <0,05). There was no difference between orthosis / assistive device groups in terms of affected side and type of stroke (p> 0,05). In group 2 including patients who are prescribed orthosis, the lower extremity spasticity ratio was statistically higher than the other two groups (p=0,001). The ratio of application of botulinum toxin injection and electrical stimulation were higher in Group 2 including patients who are prescribed orthosis than the other groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: While affected side and type of stroke do not affect orthosis / assistive device prescription, elderly and female patients are prescribed less orthosis / assistive device. Patients with a Brunnstrom stage ≥3 are more likely to be prescribed orthosis / assistive device. The length of hospitalization is longer for the patients who are prescribed orthosis / assistive device. To patients with spasticity in the lower extremity, orthosis for ambulation is prescribed more frequently. During the rehabilitation program, electrical stimulation and botulinum toxin injection are used more frequently in patients who use orthosis.
