This study presents an effective internal and external communication of safety and risk at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. To enhance employees' safety level, safety (internal) communication is one of the essential practices that should be performed in the workplaces of LNG organizations. Additionally, a risk (external) communication should also be conducted to relieve local residents' anxieties that are generated from constructing or operating LNG facilities in the vicinity of residential areas. In the first part of this thesis, the characteristics of internal communication that contains safety information were examined to determine their impacts on employees' safety awareness and behavior. In the second part, a process of external communication related to LNG facility risks was investigated to provide an effective risk communication pathway between authorities of LNG terminals and local residents. The data were collected from LNG facility employers and local residents residing near LNG infrastructures. Two methods were used to obtain data from the participants. An interview method was selected to perform for employees and a questionnaire survey method for the local residents. 431 local residents in the questionnaire and 70 employees of LNG organization in the interview participated in the study. A social network analysis (SNA) was used to visualize the pattern of the employees' safety communication network and measure the typical SNA metrics such as density, tie strength, betweenness and degree centrality. The SNA metrics and communication channel variety were considered as communication characteristics and investigated by a correlation analysis in order to reveal their impact on safety awareness and behavior. For the risk communication process between LNG organization and local residents, a traditional communication model based on the source–message–channel–receiver–effect (SMCRE) was used. First, the factors that influenced the SMCRE's each element were consolidated under groups through a factor analysis. Then, a multiple regression analysis was performed for the grouped factors to investigate the effect of the SMCRE's latter element on the former element. As a result, it was found that the density, tie strength, degree centrality and channel variety of safety communication among employees of LNG terminal were the influential characteristics of safety awareness and behavior. Moreover, an effective pathway that had two cases was established for the risk communication process between LNG facility and local residents. The first case was the relieving of social conflicts and anxieties through mutual understanding. The second case was the promotion of trust. Consequently, first part of the thesis demonstrated that raising the level of SNA metrics such as density, tie strength and degree centrality, and using various channels to communicate safety information within teams could support better safety awareness and behavior. On the other hand, the second part could assist authorities of LNG terminals with providing better risk communication to residents and enhance the acceptance of LNG facilities.
