Our daily life is crowded by interactive communication artifacts that change our relationships with people and the way we act. The affect of these digital things on people doesn't need a further study, but what is needed is an alternative design and theoretical model on this issue. RESEARCH This research includes two parts: the development of some projects and experiments and the theoretical analysis in which some interaction and critical qualities are defined. These qualities are meant to be theoretical tools for researchers to understand products around us and for designers to design new artifacts. A special focus is given to the design of interactive artifacts in urban spaces. The ecological theory, already discussed in interaction design studies, is improved by the addition of an activist and political perspective for the contribution of design into social life. Today, a debate on the role of the interaction designer help to create a new definition of the profession, of the role of the people who participate in the interaction, of the role of the artifacts in a context. The analysis of interaction ecologies is suggested in opposition to the idea of artifacts as tools of detachment. The design process for an alternative now should move towards a convergent and involving paradigm. The designer as a director has to promotes enabling processes for a bottom-to-top change through the appropriation and transformation of existing artifacts. Four interaction qualities are defined to support this framework: posture, power, profanation and dissent. CONCLUSIONS The results are presented through some design experiments and through the creation of a theoretical approach. The contribution is significant for the interaction design community both designers and theoreticians including the ones from the fields of urban design and sociology. I finally wish that this thesis contributes to a wider theoretical and practical panorama that can influence and intervene into daily life.
