Field researches which lasted two years between 1993- 1994 were carried out for the purpose of determining the relations between the water consumption of cotton and free water surface evaporation under the conditions in Aegean region. In this research three irrigation levels. when the depletion of 40 % of the available water capacity. as in subject“A”, which is accepted for 90 cm soil layer thought to be the effective root depth of cotton and 70 % as in subject“B”and subject“C”where irrigation is realised in connection with the plant appearance are carried out. have been tried. According to the result of research the amount of irrigation water applied varied 476-647 mm in 1993 and 424- 751 mm in 1994. The seasonal water consumption values varied 659-834 mm in 1993 and 680-890 mm in 1994. As a result of the researches which has been carried out the equation of Et = -253.30 + 0.79 Eo in the subject“A”, the equation of Et = -131.38 + 0.58 Eo in the subject“B”and the equation of Et = -154.77 + 0.64 Eo in the subject“C”. in 1993: the equation of Et= -378.71 + 0.94 Eo in the subject“A”. the equation of Et= -234.20 + 0. 67 Eo in the subject“B”and the equation of Et=* -346.43 + 0.88 Eo in the subject“C”in 1994 were obtained between the free water surface evaporation and the plant water consumption, and it has been understood that the mentioned relations are important at 1 ^45 level stat ist icaly in all subjects. The ratio of Et/Eo has varied between the years and the subjects during the growing season. The ratio of Et/Eo reached the values of 1.14 which has the highest value in the subject“A”87 days after sowing in 1993. and it reached the value of 1.16 which was again the highest value in the subject“A”98 days after sowing in 1994. The cover development of the research subjects during the growing season for the purpose investigating the effects of irrigation subjects on the cover development has been evaluated as the percantage of the covered area as to 1994. The plants reached their complete covering position first in the subject“A”which was irrigated when 40 % of the soil moisture depleted. and subject“B”and“C”followed this respectively. The complete covering position was reached in the period when 60 % of plant development period was generally completed. Cotton yield values obtained from the experimental plots were 3640 kg/ha in the subject“A”. 2503 kg/ha in the subject“B”.2890 kg/ha in the subject“C”in 1993. they were 3851 kg/ha in the subject“A”. 2765 kg/ha in the subject“B”and 3448 kg/ha in the subject“C”in 1994. As a result of the statistical evaluations carried out on the amounts of yield for each experimental year. the effect of irrigation subjects has been found to be different on the yield at the 1 % significant level.
