Özet

Günümüzde Bursa il sınırları içersinde yer alan, bir liman kenti olmasıyla ön plana çıkan Gemlik, antik dönemlerde Kios veya Prusias ad Mare adıyla bilinmekteydi. Bu tez çalışmasında, modern kaynaklar, sikkeler ve antik kaynaklardan edinilen bilgiler vasıtasıyla Kios'un; kent tarihinin başlangıcı olan MÖ VII. yüzyılın ortalarından, Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi sonuna kadar geçirdiği tarihsel sürece ışık tutmak amaçlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte, kentte MÖ IV. yüzyıl başlarından, MS III. yüzyıl sonlarına kadar darp edildiği gözlemlenen sikkelerin bir korpusu oluşturulup, sikke tipleri, birimleri, görevli isimleri, ikonografileri ve emisyon hacimleri açısından değerlendirilerek kentin sikke darbına ilişkin politikası ortaya koyulmuştur.

Gemlik is located within the borders of the province of Bursa and owes its importance to the fact that it is a port city. In antiquity, it was known as Cius or Prusias ad Mare. The aim of this thesis is to illuminate the historical emergence of the city from its foundation in the mid-7th century BC until the end of the Roman Imperial Period, drawing on information obtained from modern and ancient sources as well as coins. For that purpose, a corpus of coins from Gemlik has been assembled, the components of which were minted between the beginning of the 4th century BC and the end of the 3rd century AD. An examination of the coin types, denominations, officials referred to, iconography and volume of currency issued sheds light on the coinage policy of the ancient city.
