„Religious“ Violence is more than ever part of today's news coverage. In western media discourses this form of violence seems especially linked to Muslims and Islam and is often explained with their alleged „backwardness”. This study aims to dismantle this perception and genealogically trace back the development of its parts to generate a more sophisticated view of the constructed character of this perception. In the first part I tried to reconstruct modern cultural perceptions of space and time, which make it possible to classify considerable parts of the world population as „backward“, „primitive”or „traditional“ and place them in a developmental hierarchy. Following the conceptual history of religion in the next part, I try to show, how over the course of modernity a whole new concept of religion developed: Religion as an abstract „genus”with different religions as „species“, which can be classified, compared and evaluated. This conceptualization will also enable Weber to make big scale comparisons in his „Wirtschaftsethik der Weltreligionen”(Economic ethics of World Religions). In the last part I try to show, how in the work of Weber religion, violence and authority are linked together and how Islam fits into this relations. Throughout the study I try to capture the colonial context of this processes. Surprisingly, the debates about Islam in the beginning of the 20th century, which have concrete colonial implications, show many parallels to today's discussions. Also surprising is how Weber manage to consistently ignore colonial contexts nearly in his entire work.
