ABSTRACT Çakır, Hüseyin:“The Definitions and Conditions of True Tradition Ac cording to Traditionalists and Jurisprudents.”Advisor: Associate Prof. İ. Hakkı Ünal The Tradition, one of the main sources of Islam, has been the subject of many discussions regarding the qualities of True Tradition, since the times of the saha be. In the first chapter of this study, the studies of the sahabe on criticising and correcting the accounted traditions in order to provide proper accounting, is evalu ated. It was seen that their work was concentrated on the text of the traditions. After the sahabe, as a reaction resulting from the appearance of invented tra ditions, the practice of isnad began. As the relative of importance of isnad grew in time, the criticism of the narrator and senet consisted a major proportion of the cri ticism studies. Although the term of true tradition was not used in the first periods, it was seen that as a concept; it existed. The usage of certain criteria by scholars in ac cepting or rejecting the traditions, approve this. Different terms were used to exp ress the same concept of true tradition. Şafii is seen as the first scholar to note the conditions of the traditions in his book, which he utilised in accepting and quoting the traditions, although he did not use“true tradition”terminologically. After Şafii, the definitions of true traditi on were influenced by the conditions that he set. In the second chapter the conditions set for the narrator and sened are consi dered and the drawbacks of an approach solely stemming from the criticism of the narrator and sened are evaluated. In the third chapter, the different conditions set for the text, apart form the conditions related to the generally accepted concept of true tradition, are exami ned. As a conclusion, an approach consisting of both the conditions set forth for the text and sened was suggested after perceiving inventing the text is possible as much as inventing the isnad.
