This dissertation will explore the political economy of biofuel in Brazil. The history, types of biofuels and related sectors such as agriculture will be addressed. One the one hand biofuel production has positive effects for economy via job creation and providing alternative energy sources to petrol. On the other hand, it has negative effects for farmers due to inequalities in power relations, the creation of poverty and hunger, alongside negative ecological effects such as deforestation. Despite the many negative effects, biofuel production has become a key driver of economic growth. Numerous governments have supported biofuel production in Brazil, in particular president Ernesto Geisel made crucial investments to biofuel production during 1973 first oil crisis and 1979 second oil shock. Furthermore, the government of Lula da Silva invested heavily in biofuel production. Lula da Silva's government claimed that biofuel is an effective alternative to petrol and offers a wider energy solution for other developing countries. This research will provide a critical historical analysis of the expansion for biofuel production. Furthermore, relations between Malthusian theory - biofuel production and also dependency theory - biofuel production's relations for power relations will be describe. On the other hand, biofuel's effects on Brazil's political economy will be critically analyse with its negative and positive effects. Also, this study argued that there are more negative effects of biofuel production for political economy of Brazil.
